Exactly, but now seek to understand the context, not word by word, remember that Spanish, has many cognates, that is, similar words in other languages, such as English and French, once you identify them it's easier.

Precisely, today we are going to talk about a cognate in English, French and other languages that has two meanings in Spanish, besides a very good aroma. Today's word is vino.

Talking about wine or drinking wine? We are not wine experts, we are not winemakers...nor do we own a vineyard, unfortunately.

We are not in a Spanish school for foreigners and we are going to comment on how to use this word "wine" which comes from the Latin vinum and which is an alcoholic beverage made from the juice of grapes that have been squeezed and fermented naturally.

There is also wine that is not made from grapes, such as rice or palm, but it is not so common.

The origin of the word wine is interesting, it is, as we know, a beverage that has been drunk since the Neolithic era.

That is, from prehistoric times?

Yes, it is a very ancient drink and it started in the area of Asia Minor and Turkey and from there it went to the Mediterranean.

Of course, the Greeks and Romans drank a lot of wine, as we know.  The word, then, comes from these areas.

But there is another theory that the word wine comes from the Sanskrit word vana (love), which is also the origin of Venus. This is related to the old belief of the aphrodisiac powers of wine.

Anyway, that origin is interesting. Wine can be white, red, rosé or green. There are different types of wine, depending on the grape used, Cabernet, Malbec, etc.

And there are also many brands, and it varies according to the winery where it is produced or how old it is.

It is always good to look at the label of the wine, the cork or the design of the bottle...there is a lot of vocabulary around wine.

But, vino in Spanish is also the third person of the preterite indefinido, one of the past tenses of the verb venir.

Let's go to the examples?

Yesterday Maria came home.

He came by plane, I came by car

How did you come walking or by Uber?

Imagine we are waiting for a box of wine that we ordered online we can say: “¿Vino el vino? Did the wine come?

Many years ago, there was a radio advertisement that went like this: Who came? Vino Fallabrino came, it was the surname of a family that produced wine....

And it does produce, that winery still exists.

It was a very old advertisement... they repeated it all the time on the radio.

And you, what kind of wine do you like the most? Or don't you like it. Anyway, you can celebrate your progress in Spanish.

You can learn a lot of words and also a lot of Latin American culture in a fun way even if you have little time. Click here and check out all the new stuff that came with SpanishUP2U this week.
