How do we express disagreement? / ¿Cómo expresamos el desacuerdo? - 5 minutes of Spanish + Podcast- (English version)

Desacuerdo

Hello, how are you? Good morning, good afternoon, or good evening, depending on where you are or what time you are listening to us.  Spanish version

Thank you very much for joining us for another episode of 5 Minutes of Spanish. Let's practice a little Spanish...

We believe in the power of small steps. Every day we learn a few words or a new verb...

🎧 Press play and speak Spanish with us!

Of course, that's the best way to do it. So, what's today's topic?

In the previous episode, we learned how to say things like “me too” or “I agree with you.” But today, in episode 242 of the podcast, we're going to look at the other side: how to say you disagree without seeming rude.

Today we're talking about the art of disagreement in Spanish. I like to be against something.

The idea is to express a different opinion or contradict someone without creating conflict.

All right, let's see.

Phrases to express disagreement respectfully:

  • No estoy de acuerdo.
    (I don’t agree.)
  • Yo no lo veo así.
(I don’t see it that way.)
  • No lo veo de esa manera.
(I don’t see it that way.)
  • Para mí, no es tan simple.
(To me, it’s not that simple.)
  • Puede ser, pero...
    (Maybe, but...)
  • Yo en tu lugar pensaría diferente.
(If I were you, I’d think differently.)
  • Con todo respeto, pienso otra cosa.
(With all due respect, I think something else.)

Now let's have a
mini dialogue: imagine two language students talking
For me, Spanish is much easier than French.
– Oh, really? I don't see it that way. French has difficult pronunciation, yes, but Spanish grammar can also be complicated.
Well, maybe... but if I were you, I would study Spanish first.

What advice can you give me for disagreeing without creating tension?

Advice: if you want to sound polite, use phrases like “I would say that...,” “from my point of view,” “for me,” or “maybe, but...”. It's an elegant way to disagree without starting an argument.

How do you express disagreement in Spanish? Do you use any of these phrases?

Contact us on our social media, where we can chat at our leisure, and remember: there's no problem in saying no, if you say it with style.

If you liked the podcast, share it.

And if you didn't like it, write to us and tell us elegantly. We can always improve.

One thing you can't disagree with is that studying Spanish at SpanishUP2U is great, right?

See you in class or at the workshops. Remember that we have a free workshop on Thursday.

We'll be waiting for you.

See you soon.
Bye bye.
