Good morning, good afternoon or good evening depending
on where you are or what time you are listening to us.
In these 5 minutes of Spanish in the middle of the
week we are going to talk about one of the most important verbs in Spanish: the
verb “estar”.

you know, “estar” is used for location or localization.
Hi, I'm Eduardo and I'm in San Jose del Cabo, Mexico.
How are you?
The verb “estar” is one of the first verbs you learn
in Spanish and together with “ser” they translate as "to be" in
English, they have different meanings and many uses.
Last Wednesday we talked about calor and caliente and
said, "la cocina está caliente, cuidado no la toques" (the stove is
hot, be careful not to touch it).
The gas tank can be full or empty.
Mine is always empty, why is that?
The glass is half empty or half full, well you can see it empty or full depending on where you look at it
from?
It is the verb of positions: the church is in front of
the square and the pew is to the right of the church. This happens in all Latin
American cities, the plaza or zocalo is the center of the city.
Also “estar” is the verb of actions: today we are
speaking all in Spanish, bravo!

El miércoles pasado hablamos de calor y
caliente y decíamos: “la cocina está caliente, cuidado no la toques”.
El tanque de gasolina puede estar lleno o
vacío.
El mío
está siempre vacío, ¿por qué será?
El vaso está medio vacío o medio lleno, bueno tú lo puedes
ver vacío o lleno según desde donde lo mires…
Es el verbo de las posiciones: la iglesia está
al frente de la plaza y el banco está a la derecha de la iglesia. Esto pasa en
todas las ciudades de América Latina, la plaza o zócalo es el centro de la
ciudad.
También estar
es el verbo de las acciones: hoy estamos hablando todo en español, ¡bravo!

También es el verbo de las emociones:

Estoy enojado grr.
¡Ojo está
furioso!
Estoy estresado, siempre estoy ocupado…
También
puedes estar enamorada
Podemos
estar muy bien vestidas, pero con este calor mejor estar desnudos o al menos
estar descalzos.

nace el bebé. En este caso nos referimos a estar embarazada.
El Doctor
no puede venir a la clase hoy, está de guardia.
