Books, Earth and Spanish / 5 minutes of Spanish- English version+ Podcast
How are you?
Good morning, good afternoon, or good evening, depending on where you are or
what time you're listening.
Welcome to
five minutes of Spanish in the middle of the week.
Thank you for
being here for a new episode of 5 minutes. On a very special day, it's Spanish
Language Day and also Book Day.
Listen the Podcast
Yes, it is a
very special day. Long live the Spanish language! Or the Spanish language and
books in all languages.
Idioma- language
Día del Idioma español- — Spanish
Language Day
And it's also
World Book Day!
Why is it
World Book Day?
Well, on April
23rd, in 1616, Cervantes and Shakespeare died, as did Inca Garcilaso de la Vega
of Peru. Other authors in other years also died or were born on this day; in
honor of all of them, the UN establishes the commemoration.
So, let's
read today! In fact, today, Wednesday, we have another Reading Club session for
our Spanish Club: SpanishUP2U.
This workshop
is coordinated by Arabela Espinosa De los Monteros, a Spanish in Cabo teacher
since 2016. And it's been running for 5 years.
5 years is
easy to say, but it's 5 years. They've read many, many books, including 100
Years of Solitude by Gabriel García Márquez.
Congratulations
to Arabela and all the participants—great readers! If you like Spanish and also
reading, SpanishUp2U is for you. In fact, we have two workshops: one for
advanced reading and another in which we read shorter stories, and it's for
intermediate or even beginner students.
And
yesterday was Earth Day, a day to take care of our planet.
What did you do
for the earth yesterday, Eduardo? Oh, I know you watered the plants and bought
two beautiful Hoja Santa plants, our favorite herb.
Hoja Santa
is the topic of another podcast. What did you do, Malena, to honor the earth
yesterday?
I picked up
trash in the plaza and walked barefoot for a bit; here in Los Cabos, that's
easy...
Caminar descalzo/a -
to walk barefoot
Levantar basura -
to pick up trash
Let s start with the
worls tierra. Empezamos con la palabra tierra.
"Tierra" significa earth o land.
Then we have more like. Y de aquí vienen muchas otras, como terrestre — terrestrial
—, por ejemplo, un animal terrestre. for example, a land animal.
Also earthly, which
means you deal with earthly things; the earthly is the opposite of the
spiritual. The Church talks a lot about the earthly, and since we're talking
about it, let's remember Pope Francis, a Latin American, Argentine pope who
died on Monday.
Cosas terrenales - Earthly things
Terreno - piece
of land.
Y territorio, que es como una zona, un
área. — territory
verything comes from the "earth"! Now let's talk about Spanish.
More than 595 million people in the world speak Spanish.
Oh! It's the second
most spoken language in the world by number of native speakers.
And it's the second most used language on the internet, after English.
¿Lo sabías? Spanish
is the second most used
language online. Por eso es tan importante estudiar español.
And we're here to
help you study Spanish and read good books in Spanish. Happy Book and Spanish
Language Day!
And happy Earth Day (even though it was yesterday).
See you soon!
Bye, bye.
