Thank you very much for being here participating in this podcast about Spanish, a language that we love and that today summons us. I am Eduardo Satorno, Spanish teacher at SpanishUp2U and manager of Unique Trips, your travel agency.

I am Malena Algorta, Spanish teacher at Spanish in Cabo and at SpanishUp2U. If you want to know more about your Spanish site click here and you will see all the podcasts, videos and lessons we have for you, so you can write "listo" in your goal to speak Spanish in 2022.

Many Spanishup2U participants can say: listo, hecho; Hablo español.

Hablo español

That's right, congratulations! We are in 5 minutes of Spanish and this is episode number 126.

Welcome! Thank you for listening week after week. This is a podcast to practice Spanish, if you need the English version, click on artist Bruno Pegoretti's fantastic chicken. And if you come to San Jose del Cabo, you have to, of course, visit him in the Art District.

And his beautiful wife Jill, who is his inspiration and painter, too.

And chat in Spanish with them, too. But, let's get down to business!

Of course, we are! Today we'll talk about the topics of the moment, first, congratulating American listeners on Thanksgiving Day. What is Thanksgiving Day?

Thanksgiving. So, the theme is the verb to be thankful, that is, to give thanks.

NO, this was last year's. Today we will talk about a sport that has 32 countries, many of them Spanish-speaking, very excited.

Are you going to comment on soccer? They will block us...

Only in general, because soccer, which in the USA is called soccer, is of English origin, in other words, all the terms are anglicisms, there are words in Spanish, which sometimes are not used.

Off side    fuera de juego

Corner     tiro de esquina

Gol           gol

Golazo     un gol muy bueno

Gol olímpico    gol directo desde el tiro o saque de esquina

Soccer field      cancha

Ball -   balón, pelota o esférico

Referi – juez

Coach- entrenador

And some verbs?

Let's tell them with examples:

England beat Iran 6-2.

Argentina lost 2 to 1 against Saudi Arabia.

The United States drew against Wales 1 to 1.

Mexico also tied 0 to 0 with Poland but Memo Ochoa, the Mexican goalkeeper, saved a penalty.

We all applauded him a lot. Clap clap clap

To save or stop the ball is to avoid a goal.

But, we can also talk about the geography of soccer,

What is that like?

My dad always asked me for information about the countries participating in the World Cup. I studied a lot and that's how I learned some geography.

You had to look in encyclopedias and books?

Yes, there was no Google... Let's play: Gales in English is called...

Wales and its capital is...?

Cardif, it is a very old city, from the 1st century AD.

The venue of the World Cup?

Qatar, which in English is spelled with a C, capital: Doha. Population?

2,641,669 inhabitants.
