This is episode number 154 but, we are not going to talk about history, the celebrations are over, what do you say we talk about the future, about what we want later on?

The future, but... we're not really going to talk about grammar, that's boring... Anyway, I remind you, this is a podcast to practice Spanish so we ask you to listen to it while you read and then, if you need to, look for the translation. We are going to translate some words, not all of them.

Yes, we want you to understand the context, it doesn't matter if you don't understand word by word. What we do assure you is that by practicing with SpanishUp2U you will become very good at Spanish, no doubt.

Well, what about today's topic?

“Llegar a ser” (to become), another so-called verb of change, always implies the future.

The phrase llegar a ser implies a change in the situation of a person or thing in the future. It is the result of a lasting process that is constant and is considered positive.

It also implies an active participation on the part of a person, but let's explain better with examples:

Benjamin Franklin was born in Boston into a humble family. Although he had no formal education, he became a journalist, scientist, politician and ambassador to France and Spain.

He was the tenth son of a soap manufacturer and became an example for the world and today his face is on the U.S. currency.

Benjamin is a very good example of a self-made person, one of the uses of becoming that we saw last Wednesday.

This is one of the uses of becoming referring to professions.

Llegar a ser                                                to became

Familia humilde -                                          humble family

Periodista -                                                    reporter

Embajador -                                                  ambassador

Persona que se hace a sí misma -           Self-made person

You can become a general manager - director general - gerente general (general manager), surgeon (surgeon).

But not only with professions. There is a traditional saying: "to become grandparents, what a great feat".

Many people want to be important

Many mothers say: son, study to be somebody in life.

Lennon's aunt took the guitar and told John who was playing the guitar quietly in his room; "stop this, you are not going to become someone with the guitar".... Well with the best intentions many times parents, in this case aunt Mimi, we are wrong.

With the guitar John Lennon became famous.
