la copa

Welcome! Thank you for listening week after week. This is a podcast to practice Spanish, although you also have an English version if you need it. Today we talk about...

Of a triumph.....

Ah, of the town El Triunfo that has very old mines and excellent food....?

We're not going to talk about the triumph of some youngsters in a world championship last Sunday.

Oh no, soccer, but we always say we don't talk about politics, religion or soccer......

But this is special because it is the Under 20 World Championship and soccer is very important in all Spanish speaking countries. Besides, we are very happy with this triumph.

The championship was in Argentina and the final match was played by Italy and Uruguay, of course Uruguay won and they are the Under 20 World Champions.

Bravo, "Uruguay nomás", "los chiquilines se llevaron la copa".

Let's go to the vocabulary

Juego -                       game

Triunfo -                     triumph

Campeonato -           championship

Campeón -                champion

Partido -                     match

Copa -            cup

The word champion comes from the Italian: campione, and this from the Germanic kamp, which means field. But it does not refer to the field with trees, plants and animals, but to the battlefield. In English champion has the same origin.

Who classified for the quarterfinals in this championship?

Korea, Israel, Italy and Uruguay.

Uruguay was the only representative of the Americas, so everyone was rooting for them.

It must be said that although Uruguay is a very small country with a small population, 3,400,000 inhabitants in the country, it is very important in soccer.

It won the World Cup twice, in 1930 and 1950. This shout of Uruguay just comes from the World Cup in 1950, where they defeated Brazil in Rio de Janeiro, something unthinkable.

And now it has another World Cup with the U-20 team. Achieved by the chiquilines, in Uruguay they do not say chamacos as in Mexico, they say chiquilines or gurises, which comes from the Guarani language.

We continue with the championship: Korea and Italy faced each other. Italy defeated 'Korea

Remember that for sound reasons when a noun begins with I we use e instead of y. (Greek i.)

Thus: Italia “y” Corea / Corea “e” Italia.

Also, Uruguay and Israel faced each other. Here Uruguay won, of course!

And how was the final match: Uruguay-Italy?

Exciting, although Uruguay dominated from the beginning, there was no goal, extra time was expected, but in the 84th minute came the goal. Before that, a red card had been given for a kick to an Italian player, but the Var annulled it.

When the goal was scored, the whole stadium was shouting and many flags were raised, everything was light blue, this is the color of Uruguay's jersey. And there was a big celebration all over the country, a great joy.
