How are you? Good morning, good afternoon or good evening depending on
where you are or what time you are listening to us. In these 5 minutes of
Spanish in the middle of the week we are going to reflect on the uses of
“mientras” and “mientras que”.
The term mientras can be used to express two actions that are done at the
same time or simultaneously in time.
For example:
Mientras cocino escucho un podcast de SpanishUp2U
While I cook I listen to a SpanishUp2U
podcast.
It's a very good way to make the most of your time!
But another better one is:
Mientras leo este libro tú limpias la casa
While I read this book you clean the
house.
I'm sure you also say:
Hablamos mientras comemos.
Mientras espero mi turno en el doctor reviso el
WhatsApp
We talk while we eat.
While waiting for my turn at the doctor I check the WhatsApp.
En la cocina lo
aplicamos de la siguiente manera:
Mientras se cocinan las papas hago la ensalada
While the potatoes are being cooked I make the salad.
Mientras la masa descansa, bato las claras a punto
nieve.
While the dough rests, I beat the egg whites until stiff.
Mientras preparo la comida, por favor tiende la mesa
While I prepare the food please set the table
Mientras estábamos escuchando los 5 minutos de español
nos ganamos el premio mayor de la lotería ¡Qué suerte! Ahora viajamos por
América Latina mientras practicamos español.
While we were listening to the 5 minutes of Spanish we won the lottery
jackpot. How lucky! Now we travel around Latin America while practicing Spanish.
Sometimes you can also use mientras tanto and it is
the same as mientras, entretanto or en el interín.
Mientras tanto- meanwhile
Hablaba por teléfono y mientras tanto tomaba notas.
I was talking on the phone and in the meantime I was taking notes.
I remember a phrase my dad always used to say to me:
"Mientras tú vas, papá vuelve".
"As you go, Dad comes back."
Mientras tu vas, papá vuelve...
Another use of this word Mientras is to compare
people, objects, situations or information by contrasting them.
In other words, we are going to show an opposition
between two things.
Here we say: “mientras que”
A María le gusta caminar mientras que a Pedro le gusta
ver la TV.
Maria likes to walk whereas Peter likes to watch TV.
En Los Cabos hace mucho Calor mientras que en Alaska hace
frío.
In Los Cabos it is very hot while in Alaska it is cold.
No se va a terminar con la pandemia mientras que no se
vacune a la mayoría de la población
The pandemic will not end until the majority of the population is
vaccinated.
As the saying goes:
“Árboles y amores mientras tengan raíces tendrán hojas
y flores”
"Trees and loves as long as they have roots they will have leaves and
flowers."
And you surely know this phrase:
“La vida es eso que pasa
mientras estás ocupado haciendo otra cosa”
“Life is what happens to you while you´re busy making other things”

entretanto o en el interín.

Recuerdo una frase que mi papá me decía siempre: “Mientras tú vas, papá

Otro de los usos de esta palabra Mientras es la de comparar personas,
objetos, situaciones o informaciones planteando un contraste.
O sea vamos a mostrar
una oposición entre dos cosas.
Aquí decimos: mientras
que
