Una ciudad en mi memoria /A city in my memory Por Malena Algorta Delgado

Edificio de la Escuela Normal (where the teachers study)

There are landscapes that are recorded in our memory, then, when we visit them, we remember intimate feelings. That happens to me with Mercedes Corrientes, the village where my mother was born, because when I was a kid, I used to visit it frequently.

It is located north of Argentina, in the province of Corrientes. This area has, since its founding in 1832, the name of the Virgin of Mercedes (Mercy). Like Mexico and all Latin American, this countries are Spanish origins and Catholic influence.

The main wealth is livestock, Livestock Fair is big and famous. Also recently, it has developed rice production. As it has so much livestock is common to see “gauchos” with characteristic clothing, panties, hat and boots.

In this city of 33,000 inhabitants speak Spanish, with a special accent and a few words of the language Guarani (Guarani was the language of the Guarani); currently it is one of the official languages of Paraguay, a country that borders Argentina to the north.
It is said for example chamigo, rather than friend, angau instead of lying and cuñatai porá, pretty girl or beautiful chava.

Mate is also traditional beverage. Do you know what mate is?
The days are long and sunny, the weather is hot and humid, except in winter (July and August), where not long cold. Everybody sleep nap and all shops close at 12.30 and open at 4:00 until 8 thirty in the evening.

How about the architecture?
The eclectic style, that is the mixture of types, is the main architectural feature of Mercedes (porches, fences, patios).
Most of the buildings are from the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century. Overall, bricks are manufactured with local clay, but some made with stones, whose labours came from masons who worked in the trains and bridges.
The facades are mostly neoclassical, with some exception or “pintoresquista and neo-colonial”. Some decorations show the influence of Italian manufacturers. The design of the city coincides with the rich times of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century.

The music is typical Chamamé, accompanied on the accordion.

Mercedes cannot be remembered without mentioning the altar of Gauchito Gil, although some of my family do not like this tradition….
This tradition meets every January 8th, thousands of people from all Argentina. Remember the death of a gaucho for unclear reasons, apparently defected from one of the armies and so he was sentenced to death. It is said to be miraculous and many ask health, money and love. His colour is red, belonging to one of the regional parties representing the autonomy. It is currently the festival that gives tourist traffic to the city.

Also, in the area it has one natural streams that are unique in the world, it is a great place to visit if you like eco-tourism; remember to talk to Eduardo and Alejandro in Kemaj, for more information.
