"Let's talk with enthusiasm" / Hablemos con ganas / 5 minutes of Spanish + podcast- English version
Do you feel like practicing Spanish at your own pace? |
Hello! How are you?
Good morning, good afternoon or good evening depending on where you are or what
time you're listening to this podcast for learners of Spanish as a second
language.
Welcome to this podcast for learners of Spanish as a second language and
thank you very much for being here. What is our topic today?
We are on podcast
206 and in these 5 minutes of Spanish in the middle of the week, we are going
to talk about a very used expression in Spanish: (dar/tener) ganas (de).
For example:
Tenemos ganas de hacer este podcast, es muy divertido. / We're looking forward
to doing this podcast, it's a lot of fun.
Of course, and
you feel like listening to us talk about “tener ganas de”.
This expression can
express desire, hunger, natural willingness to do something and we use it every
day. It is translated into English in several ways, depending on whether it
is a physical or emotional sensation, whether it is a present or future
situation, or whether it is affirmative or negative, among others.
- Hace tiempo que teníamos ganas de conversar de las ganas de hacer
algo en los 5 minutos.
- We've been wanting to talk about "ganas de" in the 5
minutes for a long time.
More direct
translation: To want or to
desire
- Qué hermosas fotos! ¿De dónde son?
- What beautiful photos! Where are they from?
- Del estado de Oaxaca, ¿conoces Oaxaca?
- From Oaxaca, have you been there?
- No, pero tengo muchas ganas de ir.
- No, but I really want to go there or I would really like to go there.
- Pues te tengo una sorpresa, tengo las reservas hechas. Nos vamos en
el otoño.
- I have a surprise for you, I've booked the trip. We're leaving in fall.
- Genial, ¡tengo muchas ganas de ir!
- Great! I can't wait! or I'm
looking forward to going!
And talking
about love, that feeling…
Cuando no estás: me muero de ganas de
verte.
- When
you're not here: I'm dying to see you or I really want to see you.
And if we talk
about something very close in time:
¿Recuerdas que hoy tenemos la junta de
vecinos?
- Do you
remember that today we have the neighbors' meeting?
Sí, pero no tengo ganas de participar,
hablan mucho…
- Yes, but
I don't really feel like attending, they talk too much…
Something that never happens to you:
No tengo ganas de estudiar español
hoy.
o
I don't feel like studying
Spanish today. or I'm not in the mood for talking/studying.
¿Verdad que siempre tienes ganas de
practicar español?
o You always feel like practicing Spanish, right?
And you can never miss the food!
Tengo hambre, ¡qué ganas de comer
ravioles a la carusso!
- I'm
hungry, I feel like eating ravioli!
¿Tienes ganas de comer, llorar, gritar
y muchas cosas más?
- Do you
feel like eating, crying, shouting and many other things?
O también: Me dan ganas de llorar,
comer, gritar, reír, cantar.
- Or also:
I feel like crying, eating, shouting, laughing, singing.
No, por favor, ¡cantar no!
- No, please,
not singing!
Or also in the negative: "I don't feel like it".
¿Por qué no ordenas tu escritorio?
- Why
don't you tidy up your desk?
Porque no me da la gana.
- Because I don't feel like it.
And with respect to life, something more philosophical.
Hay gente que tiene ganas de
complicarse la vida, ¿no lo crees?
- Some
people just love making life difficult for themselves! Don't you think
so?
Here it has an ironic sense.
Tenemos ganas de una tanda
publicitaria, ¿nos dejas?
