A really cool podcast. Happy Mother`s Day / Un podcast "a toda madre": ¡Feliz Día de la Madre!
Hello and welcome to these 5
minutes of Spanish.
Thank you very much for
being here in this podcast to practice Spanish, what is our topic today?
On Friday we celebrate Mother's Day
in Mexico....
Ah I know, we are going
to talk about the mother and her meaning, but, we have had this podcast for
years, we already talked about the mother last year and the other ... I
understand that in this year women are on the front page since the next
president of Mexico will be a woman, but ...
But today we are going to explore
beyond the simple term “mother” in Mexican Spanish.
It must be said that,
unlike other countries, here in Mexico, no matter if it's a weekend or not, we
always celebrate our moms on May 10, even if it falls on a workday like this
year, which is Friday!
Some businesses close because the
owners go to visit their mothers.
You can hardly get into
the restaurants because they are full, it is a very important day.
We listen to Las Mañanitas early in
the morning celebrating the occasion.
The mother is a very
strong figure in Mexico, many homes are single-parent, with a woman head of
household and also provider.
Let's go to the
vocabulary
Pariente – relative
Hogar monoparental- single-parent
home
Jefa del hogar- head of the
household
Provedora- supplier
Incluso - even
However, this importance of the
mother in society is not reflected in speech. When something is beautiful or
important, it is called father.
How cool your watch! or how cool
this podcast is!
The party was awesome!
But .... this room is a mess or
chaos.¡Un desmadre o desorden!
Lío- mess
Caos- chaos
Si está muy oscuro, no se ve ni madre // if it is too dark you see
nothing.
When someone has a
crash - he/she gives himself/herself a “madrazo”
hard hit.
When an appliance or
machine doesn't work: what's wrong with this
“mother”!
If you earn very little
money (you have a very low salary): you
earn a “mother”.
He works so hard and
you don't earn a “mother”.
“Mentar madres” (to curse mothers)
or to insult
“When he is angry, he
always starts swearing at mothers”.
But we don’t always use
expressions with mother in negative contexts, do we?
We say that something is “a toda
madre” as something very good or very “padre”, there we are recognizing the
importance and courage of mothers.
Another expression of
surprise is “madre santa”: “Holy mother, look how well this child sings”.
And you, do you want to speak
Spanish “a toda madre”?

children.
Bye-bye-
