Hello! How are you?
Good morning, good afternoon, or good evening, depending on where you are or what time you're listening.
Welcome to podcast 261. Thank you for being here once again.
In these five minutes of Spanish in the middle of the week, we're going to continue with last Wednesday's topic. Do you remember? We talked about three very interesting verbs: buscar, encontrar, and perder.
Last week we saw that first we search and then we find.
But today... we're going to talk about the third verb: perder.
The translation of perder is: to lose.
Listen to the podcast.
Perder is a very common verb in Spanish and has many uses in everyday life.
For example, we can lose objects.
Perdí mis llaxives esta mañana. / I lost my keys this morning.
A veces perdemos el teléfono. Sometimes we lose the phone.
Creo que perdí mi cel en el taxi. / I think I lost my phone in the taxi.
Do you know anyone who always loses their keys? I do...
Or something very common when we travel...
Perdí mi maleta en el aeropuerto / I lost my suitcase at the airport.
Another thing that also happens a lot... wasting time.
I lost a lot of time waiting at the bank.
I don't want to waste time today.
We can also lose opportunities.
I missed the opportunity to visit that famous restaurant.
If you don't study Spanish... you can miss out on many opportunities to communicate in Latin America.
But losing isn't always refer to material things or opportunities.

Sometimes in life we also lose people we love.
For example, when someone close to us dies.
I lost my father a few years ago.
When we lose a loved one, we feel very sad.
It is a very difficult time in life.
We remember our dear Arabela, who lost her father a few days ago. We are very sorry, dear teacher.
Losing a father, mother, or friend is something that changes our lives.
But we also learn to remember those people with love and gratitude.
The Spanish language uses this verb a lot to talk about these moments.
For example:
She lost her grandfather last year. / Ella perdió a su abuelo el año pasado.
They lost a very dear friend. / Ellos perdieron a un amigo muy querido.
As you can see, the verb perder can refer to small things, like keys... or very important moments in life.
We lose objects, we lose time, we lose opportunities... and sometimes we lose people we love.
But we also learn something important.
When we lose something... we often learn to value what we have more.
Last week we said: he who seeks, finds.
And today we can add something else.
Sometimes we find things... after we've lost them.
And sometimes losing also teaches us something.
There are many more uses of perder, but today's 5 minutes are almost up.
