Hello, hello! Welcome to a new 5-minute episode of es. Thank you for listening to us week after week, for participating in our workshops, our classes… and, of course, in our cooking experience here in Los Cabos.
Today we have a topic we love… food! Well, more than food, we're going to talk about four super useful verbs we use when we eat.
You already know the typical ones like eat, cook, serve… But today we're going further. What happens when you have the plate in front of you, it smells delicious, and you're ready to get started?
Enter our four tasty verbs! Ready?
🔸 1. Probar (to
try food, to taste)
The first is to try. It's when you want to know what something tastes like.
For example:
— Did you try the new dish from the cooking experience?
— Yes, it was spectacular!
Be careful! Many students confuse "to try" with "to try," because "to try" can be both in English. But they're not the same.

Pruebo un taco / I try a taco |
"To try" means to try, like:
— I'm going to try to learn Spanish.
And "to try" refers to food, clothing, or things:
— I tried the escamoles tacos.
— I tried a shirt at the market.

By the way, did you know that escamoles are ant larvae? A pre-Hispanic delicacy! Although... they're not easily found in Los Cabos; you'll have to go to Mexico City or Oaxaca.

2. Masticar (to chew)
The second verb is to chew.
When we put food in our mouths, we have to chew it. You know, move our teeth, grind...
And mothers always say:
— Don't chew with your mouth open!
— Close your mouth when you chew.
How embarrassing if you don't!
By the way, yogis say you have to chew every bite... 30 times!
🔸 3. Digerir (to
digest)
After chewing, the body begins to digest the food.
That's the third verb: to digest.
For example:
— I can't digest beans well.
— My grandmother drinks a herbal tea to improve digestion.
In Mexico, there are many excellent plants for this: chamomile, anise, mint...
🔸 4. Saborear
(to savor, to enjoy the flavor)
And we close with the best verb: savor.
It's not just eating. It's enjoying the flavor, calmly, with pleasure.
That's eating with all your senses.
— Savor this mole poblano, it's unique.
— I like to savor a good cup of coffee after eating.
So, let's review:
✅ Taste
✅ Chew
✅ Digest
✅ Savor
Four verbs that make eating not just a necessity... but a pleasure!
