Today we’re going to look at two words that sound very similar: “plazo” and “reemplazo.” Are they related in any way? They have something in common, but their meanings are different. Let’s start with “plazo.” What does “plazo” mean? A “plazo” is a period of time we have to do something. In English, we can translate it as “deadline” when referring to a specific date, or as “time period” when referring to a general span of time. So, if I have to turn in an assignment on Friday, I have until Friday to do it. Exactly. For example: “The deadline for turning in the assignment is Friday.” And can I say “I have a one-week deadline”? The word “faith” can also express trust or confidence in something or someone, even when we don’t yet have all the evidence. So I can have faith in myself. Exactly. You can have faith in yourself, or self-confidence. And where does the word come from? It comes from the Latin *fides*, which means trust, loyalty, or faith. Because a rag is an old, worn-out piece of cloth that’s often no longer good for wearing. So, when we say “rags are old,” we’re playing with the idea that something old can be an object, but not necessarily a person. Right. And “rag” has other uses. For example, when we talk about “old rags,” we’re literally talking about old clothes or old fabric. We have cleaning rags; they’re often made from old clothes.
