Ahh, happy “5 Minutes of Spanish” Day—it’s your day!

And for all the podcast’s subscribers, of course.It’s a hard word to pronounce—at least for me. The other day, someone taught me how to say it…

So, today, September 30, we’re celebrating International Podcast Day.

Yes. And it’s a great opportunity to talk a little about this digital audio format, which has become part of the daily lives of millions of people.

And since when has it been celebrated?

It began in 2014, thanks to Steve Lee, founder of Modern Life Network. That year, he organized a six-hour live stream to celebrate this new medium.

So, it’s not a very old tradition.

No. And that’s interesting because podcasts seem like they’ve been part of our lives for a very long time, but in reality, their history is quite recent.

And where does the word “podcast” come from?

It’s a combination of two English words:iPod y broadcasting which means “transmission.”

Yes. And this is a good opportunity to talk a little about this format that has become part of the daily lives of millions of people.

What are its advantages?

One of the great advantages of podcasts is freedom.

You decide what you want to listen to, when you want to listen to it, and where. You can listen to a podcast while you’re cooking, walking, driving, exercising, or simply relaxing.

You don’t have to be available at a specific time. The podcast adapts to your life.

And there’s another great advantage: variety.

There are podcasts about news, stories, comedy, mystery, education, technology, travel, languages—like “5 Minutes of Spanish”—practically any topic you can imagine.

And you can find a podcast that suits your interests.

Yes. And I think there’s a third very important word: closeness.
The voice creates a very special connection.

Because we’re not just reading words. We’re listening to a voice.
We hear the rhythm, the intonation, the pauses, the laughter, the emotion.
And after listening to someone regularly, their voice can start to feel familiar to us.

It can feel almost as if someone were speaking directly to us. I love it.

And that’s exactly why I want to talk today about the topic that brings us together: 5 Minutes of Spanish.

Our podcast first aired in May 2020.

And since then, it’s been airing every Wednesday.

Every Wednesday.

For more than six years.

So today, on International Podcast Day, we want to celebrate all those podcasts that keep us informed, teach us, keep us company, and let us discover new voices and new ideas.

And we also want to celebrate our “Five Minutes of Spanish.”
To those of you who’ve been listening since the beginning: thank you for being here all these years.

And to those of you who’ve just discovered us: welcome.
