Learn Spanish with the World Cup Mascots / Aprende español con las mascotas del mundial- 5 minutos de español + Podcast (English version)

 Hello! How are you?

Good morning, good afternoon, or good evening, depending on where you are or what time you're listening.

Welcome to podcast episode 274. Thanks for being here. And we're continuing with the hottest topics right now: the World Cup.

And…yes, as of July 1, 2026, almost all of our podcast listeners have their countries in the running.
Yes, the USA, Canada, Mexico, England, France (a potential champion), Australia…they're still in the running.

Other countries have already been eliminated, like South Africa and Uruguay, but hey, this isn't a football podcast, right?

No, and it's not a geography podcast either. We're just going to talk about the World Cup mascots—they're adorable, great for marketing…and for practicing your Spanish in 5 minutes.

Each host country wants to showcase something special about its culture and nature.
There are three mascots in the 2026 World Cup, one for each host country.

Canada presents Maple, a moose who plays goalkeeper. He represents creativity, resilience, and the famous maple leaf.

Mexico presents Zayu, a jaguar who plays as a forward. The jaguar was a very important animal for the ancient civilizations of Mexico. It represents strength, agility, and cultural pride.

The United States presents Clutch, a bald eagle who plays as a midfielder. He represents leadership, courage, and unity.

Midfielder means "mediocampista.
However, many people thought Mexico's mascot would be an axolotl.
Why is the axolotl so famous?

The axolotl is a small amphibian that lives naturally only in the canals of Xochimilco, in Mexico City. It is one of the most extraordinary animals in the world because it can regenerate its legs, its tail, and even parts of its heart and brain.

Amphibian means "anfibio."
To regenerate means "regenerar.”

Its name comes from the Nahuatl word "axólotl" and is related to Xólotl, the Aztec god of fire, lightning, and transformation. According to legend, Xólotl transformed himself into an axolotl to hide and avoid being sacrificed by the other gods.
Legend means "leyenda."

Relámpagos- lightning

Today, the axolotl is a symbol of Mexico City and appears in murals, toys, books, t-shirts, and even on the Mexican fifty-peso bill. It is also an endangered species, which is why many people are working to protect its habitat.
Endangered species means "especie en peligro de extinción."

In the end, pets, animals, and local festivals make a World Cup much more than just a football tournament. It's good to celebrate, as long as it's done responsibly. Everything in moderation, as the slogan of a Mexican beer brand says.

But we won't mention the name... we're not advertising... ha-ha
Brand
And you? Do you have pets? Do you like to celebrate?
Thank you so much for listening, and until next time.

See you soon!
Bye-bye!
