¡Feliz cumpleaños! 5 minutes of Spanish + Podcast English version- 263

 How are you?
Good morning, good afternoon, or good evening, depending on where you are or what time you’re listening.
Thank you very much for joining us and listening until the end.
In these 5 minutes of Spanish midweek, we’re going to talk about “cumplir,” which means to carry out or achieve a goal. “Cumplir” comes from the Latin “complere,” which means to complete or fill something.
When do we use this verb?
It’s a verb that’s used a lot and changes meaning depending on the context in which we use it; we use it in some way almost every day.
That’s why we’re going to look at many English verbs that translate to “cumplir” in Spanish: fulfill, meet, comply, accomplish, achieve, obey, follow
Wow! So many verbs! But at least  “cumplir” is a regular verb,  ending in “-ir” like “escribir,” so it follows the same conjugation patterns: I fulfill / you fulfill; he / she / you fulfill / we fulfill / they fulfill

Listen to the podcast
Where do we  use it?
It is used in both spoken and written language; in formal contexts or in everyday speech. Let’s analyze some contexts, such as:

Cumplí todos mis sueños a corto plazo.    I realized all of my short- term dreams

Los marineros cumplen las órdenes del capitán. The sailors follow the captain's orders.

3 Cumplir con una promesa o juramento /To keep a promise or an oath

Espero que cumpla su promesa / I hope he keeps his promise

Y cumplió su juramento de amor eterno / And he fulfilled his oath of eternal love

Este mes de abril estamos cumpliendo 1 año del taller vamos a platicar / This April we are celebrating the first anniversary of the workshop: Vamos a platicar

And also from “Cooking & Spanish Experience,” the Friday workshop on Facebook

So, what are we doing to celebrate this birthday?

We have a special guest this coming Friday, April 23, 2021—a Peruvian chef. It’s going to be a really, really fun workshop

And we’re going to eat really well!

Peruvian cuisine is one of the best in the world.
