What is the topic of the day?                            

Since yesterday was Day of the Dead, a very important celebration in Mexico, that since 2003 has been considered Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.....

I know, let's talk about the verb "Morir".

No, that was the topic in last year's 5 minutes, in the transcript we leave you the link so you can listen to it again. This year we are going to talk about another verb, but first, tell us how to say Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO .... / Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO ....

It is a very original and colorful celebration. This kind of celebration only takes place in Mexico and Guatemala, not in the rest of the Hispanic World, where people spend the Day of the Dead in a different way.

What verb are we talking about today?

That is, as we are celebrating the verb today is to entertain yourself

These days we have a lot of activities and that is why we will talk about this verb that has to do with entertaining.

It is a cognate with English but not with French. It belongs to the family of the verb tener so it is conjugated the same.

Algunas personas se entretienen con las palabras cruzadas o los rompecabezas. Yo me entretengo estudiando idiomas

Some people entertain themselves with crosswords or puzzles. I entertain myself by studying languages.

It is a cognate with English but when using it has some differences. Let's look at some examples

Muchas personas se entretienen bordando o tejiendo.

Many people entertain themselves with embroidery or knitting.

Also could be a person that entertain themselves, per example:

También puede ser una persona que entretiene, por ejemplo:

El payaso entretiene a los niños en el cumpleaños. / The clown entertains the children at the birthday party

 

Esta película es muy entretenida / This movie is very entertaining

In other words, to be entertained is to spend time in a pleasant way.

En los días de calor nos entretenemos en la playa / On hot days we entertain ourselves at the beach.

 

But we can entertain ourselves with something and waste time, here is a different use of the verb entretener in Spanish.

 

Me entretuve mirando Facebook y no terminé el trabajo / I got distracted checking my Facebook and I didn´t finish my work

Ve directo a casa de tu abuelita no te entretengas en el bosque dijo la madre a Caperucita Roja / Go straight to your granny's house don't dawdle in the woods said the mother to Little Red Riding Hood

In other words, to entertain oneself is also to waste time occupying one's attention on something that prevents one from continuing with the action.

Llegó tarde porque se entretuvo buscando las llaves del automóvil. / She was late because she got stuck looking for the car keys.

 

So, entertain is the verb, the adjective entertained and the noun entertainment.

We are in the age of entertainment, it is something very, very important. With technology we can never be bored anymore.

When we were kids we played outside to entertain ourselves, now kids entertain themselves by watching movies on their cell phones.

Ya sé, vamos a hablar del verbo Morir

No, ese fue el tema en los 5 minutos del año pasado, en la transcripción te dejamos el enlace para que lo escuches nuevamente. Este año vamos a hablar de otro verbo, pero primero, dinos cómo se dice en inglés Patrimonio Inmaterial de la Humanidad por la UNESCO…. / Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO ....

Es que es una fiesta muy original y colorida. Este tipo de celebración solo se realiza en México y Guatemala, no, en el resto del Mundo Hispánico, donde las personas pasan el Día de Muertos en forma diferente.

¿De qué verbo hablamos hoy?

O sea como estamos festejando el verbo de hoy es entretenerse / to entertain yourself

En estos días tenemos muchas actividades y por eso hablaremos de este verbo que tiene que ver con entretenerse.

Es un cognado con el inglés no así con el francés. Pertenece a la familia del verbo tener por lo que se conjuga igual.

Algunas personas se entretienen con las palabras cruzadas o los rompecabezas. Yo me entretengo estudiando idiomas.

Es un cognado con el inglés pero al usarlo tiene algunas diferencias. Veamos algunos ejemplos

Muchas personas se entretienen bordando o tejiendo.

Many people entertain themselves by embroidering or knitting.

También puede ser una persona que entretiene, por ejemplo: El payaso entretiene a los niños en el cumpleaños. / The clown entertains the children at the birthday party

Esta película es muy entretenida / This movie is very entertaining

O sea que entretenerse es pasar el tiempo de manera agradable

En los días de calor nos entretenemos en la playa / On hot days we entertain ourselves at the beach.

Pero nos podemos entretener con algo y perder tiempo, aquí hay un uso diferente del verbo entretener en español.

Me entretuve mirando Facebook y no terminé el trabajo / I got distracted checking my Facebook and I didn´t finish my work

Ve directo a casa de tu abuelita no te entretengas en el bosque dijo la madre a Caperucita Roja / Go straight to your granny's house don't dawdle in the woods said the mother to Little Red Riding Hood

O sea que entretenerse es también perder el tiempo ocupando la atención en una cosa que impide que continúe con la acción.

Veamos un ejemplo

Llegó tarde porque se entretuvo buscando las llaves del automóvil. / She was late because she got stuck looking for the car keys.

Entonces, entretener es el verbo, el adjetivo entretenido y el sustantivo el entretenimiento.

Estamos en la era del entretenimiento, es algo muy pero muy importante. Con la tecnología ya no podemos estar aburridos nunca.

Cuando éramos niños jugábamos afuera para entretenernos, ahora los niños se entretienen mirando películas en el celular.
