5 minutes of Spanish: Bueno vs bien /versión inglés y español

Hola, ¿qué tal amigos?

In the 5 minutes of Spanish in the middle of the week we will reflect on 3 very short words that are usually difficult to differentiate for students of Spanish.

They are:

Bueno, buen and bien.

Are you OK to talk about this?

If it is good and learning to use them helps a lot to speak fluently.

Then, let's get started!

"Bueno" is an adjective, as such, it modifies names as well as matches them in gender and number.

• He's a good student.
• She's a good student.
• They're good girls.
• Your work is good.
• The online classes are very good.

When do we use “buen”?

When it goes before a masculine singular noun, to emphasize, the abbreviated form "BUEN" is used:

He's a good student.

He is a good dog.

You did a good job with your children's education.

As you can see, bueno and bien have the same meaning and function. You just have to make sure you use them in the right order.

Well, shall we continue? In this case, bueno is "well"

This bueno, as an interjection, you will hear it a lot in conversations, it is a way to start a dialogue, to show surprise, approval, joy or acceptance. Usually it does not add anything to the message, it is a filler word, to let the brain rest and prepare what is going to be said (same as well….):

• Well, that's good. 
• So, what are we going to do?
• Okay well...
• Okay, kids, time for bed! Let's go to bed!
• Riiiing.. ¿Bueno? Who do you want to talk to? - You usually say bueno in Mexico when you answer the phone or cell phone.
• So, what about Bien?

Bien is an adverb so it modifies a verb, adjective or adverb.

• It works well
• Write well
• I feel good.
• I like my coffee really hot and my water really cold.
• Make it very slowly.
• The plane flies “bien” high (it's the same as the plane flies very high).

When do we use: ser bueno/ estar bueno / estar bien?

To “ser bueno” means to possess an inner goodness:

• Guadalupe is very kind, every afternoon she helps in a charity organization.

Ser bueno is also equal to being of good quality

• My computer is very good. The opposite is to be bad or to be cheap.
• This car is great! It never breaks down.

We use bueno to talk about something useful or beneficial, that is, appropriate for a purpose. It's followed by "para – to or for"

For example:

• Podcasts are good for learning Spanish
• Alcohol is good for preventing Covid
• Estar bien (being well) - it means being in good shape in a literal sense.
• How are you?
• Very well, thank you.
• 
  
• Is the car okay? Yeah, luckily, it was just short of oil.
• 
  
• It's also to agree: Is that okay? Yeah, sure, it's fine.
• 
  
• We also use it for two important things:

1 health:

Are you feeling well? If it was nothing, I rested and I'm fine now.

2 The food:

If a meal is delicious, we say it's very good or está muy buena.

How good this mole is! You can feel the mixture of flavors!

In a very colloquial way it is said of a person of the feminine gender generally:

Está muy buena or está bien buena - She's very hot.

And even more colloquially and among the young

Está bien pinche buena. She is f… hot.

This to refer to a woman with, let´s say, "dangerous curves" like the song by the group ExtraLarge from Santa Cruz formed by a group of Spanish students that we referred to in a previous Podcast.

For safety's sake, we do not advise male students to use that expression referring to "female" in Mexico.

You can say: La margarita está muy buena. The margarita is very good.

En los 5 minutos de español en la mitad de la semana vamos a reflexionar sobre 3 palabras muy cortas que generalmente son difíciles de diferenciar  para los estudiantes de español.

Ellas son:
Bueno, buen y bien.

¿Te parece bien hablar de esto?
Si es bueno y aprender a usarlas ayuda mucho a hablar con fluidez.
Entonces, ¡comenzamos!

”Bueno” es un adjetivo,  como tal, modifica a los nombres así como también,  coincide con ellos en género y número.

Es un estudiante bueno.

Es una estudiante buena
Son unas niñas buenas.
Tu trabajo es bueno.
Las clases en línea son muy buenas

¿Cuándo usamos buen?
Cuando va delante de un sustantivo masculino singular, para enfatizar, se utiliza la forma abreviada “BUEN”:

Es un buen estudiante.
Es un buen perro.
Hiciste un buen trabajo con la educación de tus hijos.

Como pueden ver, buen y bueno tienen el mismo significado y la misma función. Hay que fijarse en utilizarlos en el orden correcto.

Bueno, ¿seguimos? En este caso bueno es “well”
Este bueno, como interjección, lo vas a escuchar mucho en las conversaciones, es una forma de iniciar un diálogo, de mostrar    sorpresa, aprobación, alegría o aceptación. Por lo general no agrega nada al mensaje, es una palabra de relleno, para dejar al cerebro descansar y preparar lo que se va a decir:

Bueno, qué bien

Y bueno, ¿qué le vamos a hacer?

Ok bueno…

¡Bueno niños es hora de dormir! ¡Vamos a la cama!

Riiiing ¿Bueno? ¿Con quién quiere hablar? – Generalmente se dice Bueno en México al atender el teléfono o el celular.

Y, ¿qué pasa con bien?
Bien es un adverbio de modo que modifica un verbo, adjetivo o adverbio.

Trabaja bien

Escribe bien

Me siento bien

El café me gusta bien caliente y el agua bien fría.

Hazlo bien lentamente.

El avión vuela bien alto (es igual al avión vuela muy alto).

¿Cuándo usamos: ser bueno / estar bueno / estar bien?
Ser bueno significa poseer una bondad interior:
Guadalupe es muy buena, todas las tardes ayuda en una organización de caridad.

Ser bueno también es igual a ser de calidad


Mi computadora es muy buena. Lo contrario es ser de mala calidad o ser mala.
¡Este carro es buenísimo! No se rompe nunca.
Usamos bueno para hablar de algo útil o beneficioso, es decir, apropiado para un fin. Va seguido de “para”

Por ejemplo:
Los podcasts son buenos para aprender español

El alcohol es bueno para prevenir el Covid

Estar bien significa estar en buen estado en un sentido literal.
¿Cómo estás?
Muy bien gracias

¿El carro está bien? Sí, por suerte, solo le faltaba aceite.

También es estar de acuerdo: ¿Te parece bien? Sí claro, está muy bien.

Lo usamos además para dos aspectos importantes:

1 la salud:
¿Te sientes bien? Si no era nada, descansé y ya estoy bien.

2 y para la comida:
Si una comida está deliciosa decimos está muy rica o está muy buena.
¡Qué bueno que está este mole!  ¡Se siente la mezcla de sabores!

De manera muy coloquial se dice de una persona del género femenino por lo general:
Está muy buena
Está bien buena
Y más coloquial aún y entre los jóvenes
Está bien pinche buena

Esto para referirse a una mujer digamos, de “curvas peligrosas” como la canción del grupo ExtraLarge de Santa Cruz formado por estudiantes de español al que nos referimos en un Podcast anterior.

Por seguridad, a los estudiantes hombres no les aconsejamos usar estar buena referido al sexo femenino.

Si pueden decir:
La margarita está muy buena.
