Today we're going to talk about a very versatile verb: to reach.

 

You've already noticed it, haven't you? Alcanzar translates as to reach or to achieve.

 

Yes, let's go to some examples

Once I was running to catch the bus or “camion” as we call it in Mexico and I couldn't reach it, luckily a man with a cane managed to stop the bus...

 

I imagine that with the cane...

 

Yes, how did you realize? I got on the truck exhausted, ...

 

But at least you reached the bus ....

 

Yes, just barely. And do you have any funny examples?

 

Sure! Once I was competing in the Karate final exam, and the guy who was fighting with me kicked me and hit me in the head…. well, I lost consciousness…

 

Oops, what a scare, the one who was very nervous was the teacher....

And your mother?

 

No, she wasn't there, fortunately.  I went with my brother who was laughing...

Yes, although my ego got a little bruised. But hey, see how much fun it can be to talk about the verb “to reach”?

Does this verb alcanzar come from Arabic?

 

It might seem to be from Arabic because it starts with al but it comes from Latin: incalciare which means to step on the heels in Latin.

Llegar –          to reach

Lograr -          to achieve

Obtener -       to obtain

Conseguir -    to get

 

Antonyms

Perder -          to lose

Dejar –           to leave
