What it is and how to overcome the January slope ("la cuesta de enero") 5 minutos de español + Podcast / English version

In this podcast we talk about the January slope, what it is and how to overcome it.

Good morning, good afternoon or good evening depending on where you are or what time you are listening to us.

Thank you very much for being here participating in this podcast about Spanish, a language that we love and that today summons us.

And today is the third podcast of the year and we keep going up in this January 2024...we are in the 180th edition of 5 minutes of Spanish.

We continue with the first podcast, second, third podcast of January, we already commented that it was not very original, but it is good to learn the ordinal numbers, first, second, third, fourth, ... is a little boring, don't you think?

We have to learn them, anyway, and if we repeat them, it's a little easier, don't you think?

Maybe, what is this third podcast of the year 2024 about? Why the uploading in January?

It's just that today we're going to talk about the January slope, I mean we're going up this slope.

Oh, well, we talked about the Carrera Guadalupe-Reyes and now we are going to the "Cuesta de enero". Remember that we call Carrera Guadalupe-Reyes the days between December 12, the day of the Virgin of Guadalupe and the Day of the Kings, January 6, which we talked about in another Podcast.

This is a race of holidays where we eat, give gifts, party and of course, a lot of shopping and spending... In other words, we spend a lot of money.

What is the “cuesta de enero”?

In Spain and Latin America, January is the time of economic hardship that coincides with this month as a result of the extraordinary expenses made during the Christmas holidays and the rise in prices due to the holidays.

Yes, some people spend a lot during these days, travel, go to parties, others don't, right?

The reality is that we all eat a lot and some of us gain a few extra pounds.

We spend money, that is, we lose money, but we gain kilos...and this is also part of the January slope depression.

Subir una cuesta / go up a slope

 What is a slope?

A slope is a sloping terrain, a hillside or an ascent.

Cuesta o pendiente – slope

It is also used as a conjugation of the verb costar: ¿Cuánto cuesta este libro?

Another use: “Me cuesta hablar en público” - Speaking in public is hard for me.

Ganar – to win

Ganar peso - to gain weight

Perder – to lose

Gastar dinero- to spend money

How can you successfully overcome this January slope?

Well, the weight thing is to mentalize not to eat .... and that's it. But regarding finances, I know you know about finances...but we women are good at planning our expenses well.

Making a good budget, keeping shopping lists and....

Stay on the shopping list....

Presupuesto- budget

Be careful with the “promociones y las ofertas” / promotions and offers.

Except for Spanish in Cabo and SpanishUp2U!

Cuidar el gasto- take care of spending

And speaking of planning your spending and budget, we have some very good news: if you come to study Spanish in Los Cabos, you already have an apartment next to the school, for a real immersion in the life of Los Cabos.

Plus, you can have lunch with us at noon, study Spanish, enjoy Los Cabos and watch your budget.

Thank you very much for making it this far in the Podcast. And thank you for listening, participating, commenting. Spanish in Cabo and SpanishUp2U wouldn't be the same without you. We want you to speak and think in Spanish, that's our mission.

Knowing that you are here makes the January slope easier, thank you!

And, if you liked this podcast, please share it.
