Good
morning, good afternoon or good evening depending on where you are or what time
you are listening to us.
Thank
you very much for being here participating in this podcast about Spanish, a
language that we love and that summons us today.
We are
Malena and Eduardo, teachers of Spanish for foreigners, who every week we talk
and reflect with you, through this podcast, about expressions or verbs that are
used in everyday life.
We
have been listening to each other every Wednesday for 3 and a half years! This
podcast is a bit old.... “yo no”. We would very much like you to send us what
expressions or topics you want to practice.
You
also have other options, if you want to know more click here and we will contact you.
What
is our topic today?
As
October 9th was "Thanksgiving Day in Canada", we would like to
congratulate the Canadian listeners of the 5 minutes of Spanish in this Podcast
number 165. We hope you had a great day with your families and friends.
And
that you enjoyed Thanksgiving dinner with turkey and cranberry sauces....
Always
thinking of food....
Well,
those are my wishes. Let's get to today's topic, I figure since it was
Thanksgiving, we're going to talk about Thankfulness.
No, we
talked about Thanks and thankfulness last year and the other year. Today we're
going to think about the types of responses to the polite word: thank you.
Listen here the podcast
First
a little bit of vocabulary?
Acción de gracias – Thanksgiving
Deseamos que hayan pasado un excelente día. We
hope you had a great time
Y que hayan disfrutado la Cena de Acción de Gracias con el pavo y las
salsas de arándanos… And that you enjoyed Thanksgiving Dinner with the
turkey and cranberry sauce…
Palabras de cortesía - Courtesy words –
Respuesta - answer,
response
One of
the first things you learned in Spanish class was to say Gracias and the
response of nada. This is repeated almost automatically and without thinking.
But there are other response alternatives to "de nada" or "por
nada".
1 No
hay de qué - It doesn't matter / you’re welcome
It comes from “no hay
de qué agradecer”.
Thank
you, my love, for doing the dishes!
You're
welcome
2 Gracias a ti / Gracias a usted - Thanks to you
Thank
you friend for your sincerity
Thanks
to you, you know you can count on me
Formal
context:
Thanks
for the appointment, I go to the doctor on Monday at 11:00.
Thanks
to you.
3 - No hay problema. It’s not a problem
Thank
you for watching our granddaughters this afternoon.
It's
not a problem, they are very well behaved.
4 - Es un placer. / It’s a pleasure
Thank
you for taking me to the airport
It's a
pleasure
5 - Para servirte / Para servirla o servirlo. To serve you.
Thank
you for everything
We are
here to serve you.
Ahh
I'll take your word for it!
Well,
“para servirla” is used in a formal context, in a restaurant or hotel. Not in
family life.
