Good morning, good afternoon, or good evening, depending on where you are or when you're listening to us.

Thank you very much for being here and participating in this podcast about Spanish, a language we love and that brings us together today.

Spanish version

Today, in episode 252, we're going to talk about a very Mexican and very real expression:

the Guadalupe-Reyes Marathon.

Listen to the Podcast

Why is it called that?

Because it's the period of time that begins on December 12, with the Day of the Virgin of Guadalupe, and ends on January 6, with Three Kings Day.

That's almost four weeks.

Exactly, because on the 11th the Virgin's festivities begin with fireworks and lots of alcoholic beverages

...and it ends the day after Three Kings Day with a hangover...

Between those dates, from December 12th to January 6th, we in Mexico experience a long season of celebrations.

A real marathon of parties and celebrations. Where does the name come from?

A surveillance operation by the former federal police was called that during this time of year, when they increased security on highways, roads, and activities.

The police work hard during this time of year because of accidents and parties.

And so do doctors, with burns from fireworks.

And people who drink too much alcohol and feel sick, have hangovers, and so on...

Yes, it's true, emergency rooms are busy these days. If you're a doctor, you know what we're talking about...

But let's think positively and get back to the party. What happens during this marathon?

There are posadas, gatherings with friends, family dinners, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year's Eve, and finally Three Kings Day.

The main activity during all these days?

👉 Eating and drinking. Eating, sharing, toasting, and eating again.

Tamales, pozole, romeritos, cod, punch, buñuelos, rosca de reyes...

Every holiday has its special dish.

That's what this period is called in Mexico: Christmas celebrations. It's a time to get together, rest, visit family, and also break the routine a little.

And so... what is the result of the Guadalupe-Reyes Marathon?

Well, you can imagine, for some of us, the result is a few extra pounds,

especially for those of us who really enjoy food.

Let´s go to the vocabulary

Vocabulary- vocabulario

kilos de más / engordar – extra kilos / to gain weight

adelgazar – to lose weight

cruda – hangover

brindar – to toast

Nochebuena – Christmas Eve

Navidad – Christmas

Día de los Reyes Magos – Three Kings’ Day / Epiphany

A few days of hustle and bustle and celebrations.

But don't worry, there will be time in January to get back on track.

The important thing about the Guadalupe-Reyes Marathon is not just the food, but the togetherness, the traditions, and the time spent with the people we love.

Thank you for joining us week after week.

We hope you are enjoying the holidays with your loved ones and that Spanish continues to be one of your goals.

We'll be in touch very soon. Keep enjoying the Guadalupe-Reyes Marathon!

See you soon

Bye, bye
