5 minutes of Spanish: About volver, devolver & volverse + Podcast. (English version)
How are you? Good morning, good afternoon or good evening,
depending on where you are or what time you are listening to us.
Volver al trabajo |
In these 5 minutes of Spanish in the middle of the week we
are going to analyze the verbs volver (to come back), devolver (to return) and
volverse (to become). Let's go with volver since we came back from our trip to
Puerto Vallarta, so we are inspired by this verb.
Yes, and we are very happy to be back or come back
with you. The past two weeks we sent out a recorded version of the podcast, but
today we are back to record and we are at number....
150 one hundred and fifty, a big number. We still want to
reintroduce ourselves, because we are:

foreigners in Spanish in Cabo and in SpanishUp2U.

Back to our verbs: volver is the same as regresar,
right?
Yes, in this context of turning around or returning to the
starting point. Also, we can say retornar which is cognate of English, but it
is not used much.
Retornar- to return
How about if we conjugate it?
It is an irregular verb, in the present tense it changes
the u for the o just like the verb mover. The past participle is very
irregular: vuelto.
I go to the beach on A Street but I return on B
Street because there is a lot of traffic.
We came back from Puerto Vallarta a week ago.
The wife says to the husband: My
love, what time are you coming back?
And in art?
It is a powerful verb: Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer the poet of
romanticism used to say:
The dark swallows will return
On your balcony their nests to hang...
Oscuras golondrinas- dark swallows
Nidos- nests
Another example is the tango of the famous Carlos Gardel:
"Volver", Of course, he speaks of a man returning, or going back to
his hometown, he says nostalgically:
"One always returns to one's first
love".
Another use of volver in which it does not mean the same as
regresar, is when you are going to do an action again, you are going to repeat
that action.
There we use: volver a + infinitivo
Let's rewrite more examples of
these verbs.
Students usually go back to studying the
subjunctive, don't they?
Art gives us another beautiful
song for this verb followed by a and an infinitive.
The song is: "Volver a
empezar", by the Argentinian Alejandro Lerner.
This year the color yellow was used again.
What about devolver?
Devolver in English means- to return
In what context can you hear it?
For example, if you rent a car, you have to
return it on time and with gas.
Devolver el carro rentado |
It is also good to return books
you borrow.
You can return a favor, someone helps you and
you in another memento help him and tell him I return the favor.
And return?
It is one of the 6 verbs of change, in
English it is translated as to become.
What does it mean to become?
It expresses a
rapid and lasting change in a person's character or attitude.
For example, a person who has
been robbed many times becomes more suspicious.
