Are
we done with the billboards? What's today's podcast about?
Today,
in podcast number 135 we will talk about a very familiar word, even
familiar, I would say?
A
familiar word... I know, we're going to talk about vocabulary like father,
mother, relative... ....
No,
we're just going to talk about the word “cartel”.
Oh,
my goodness..... “no me asustes / do not scare me”. YouTube is going to censor
us...”cártel” with accent on the a or without accent?
Without
an accent on the a, “cartel” is an advertisement or sheet of paper with
information.
The
word “cartel” can refer to two things: an advertisement or an organization with
economic or criminal interests.
Let's
go to the examples: The restrooms in stores always have to have a sign that
says: ladies or gents.
Or, women or men.
Well,
yes. Businesses should have two restrooms and many signs indicating, for example,
emergency exits, entrance, stairways, fire extinguishers, etc.
José abrió un nuevo restaurante, está en la
esquina y tiene un cartel muy iluminado. /
Jose
opened a new restaurant; it is on the corner and has a brightly lit sign.
El Mercado Orgánico de San José necesita un
nuevo cartel, el que tiene es muy pequeño. / The San Jose Organic
Market needs a new sign, the one it has is too small.
The
Sinocan “cartel” reported that they made an agreement with the Tas “cartel”.
And
the new “cartel” was formed.... “Sinocantas” ...
Oh
please.
Is
it “cartel” or “cartel”?
The
acute word, “cartel” is the one used for informative posters or advertisements.
On the other hand, “cartel” as an economic or criminal organization can be
written with an accent on the a (cártel) or without an accent
(cartel) as recommended by The Royal Academy.
It
is a controversial or polemic word, at least, in recent times, for the reasons
already known.
Well,
yes. The title of the podcast is right, isn't it? Didn't it catch your
attention? It's a word that millennials and centennials call.... how was the
bait thing?
Clickbait,
we talked about that today at lunch, Clickbaiting is a writing technique to get
visitors to our websites and thus increase revenue and visits.
And
that's what we want, that you listen to us and share us with friends,
neighbors, relatives, in your social networks and everywhere! Something simple,
that you paint a sign that says: Viva SpanishUP2U! and that you become a
walker, if you are not already one, by clicking here. I don't know what you are
waiting for to become a member because, if you got this far in the podcast, you
are interested in Spanish and you are missing a lot of fun articles ....
And
effective, but, let's get to the translations:
Cartel - poster, banner, sign
Cartel – Cartel
Organización delictiva- Criminal organization
Carnada - bait (this
is for fishermen)
Llamar la atención - to call the attention.
Pariente- relative
Years ago Poster for Cooking class
There
is a history of this word, but you know what, let's tell you this story on our
networks, Instagram or Facebook. Because of the time thing and the bait thing
....
What
if I don't have networks?
We
send it to you in a Whats App or email or e-mail.
Many
students when we tell them that we have a nice “cartel” in Spanish in Cabo at the
school in Mexico, they look at us in an odd way. And we tell them it's a
sign...and they say Ahh.
But,
as we saw it's a common word, if it's an informative poster you can say “afiche”,
which comes from French. If it's very pretty with pictures, “poster” ... but if
it's commercial, it's a “cartel”, billboard or advertisement. And, it's a word
you're going to hear a lot in this context.
What
