You enjoy the art and history of downtown San Jose and practice new words, a perfect plan. Our topic today is...

I know, we're going to talk about Christmas vocabulary, of course.

Well, no, we did that last December and the December before last, today we are going to talk about an action we are all going to do on Christmas and New Year, and that is....

To toast and say to each other: Merry Christmas! Then, we open our gifts and the most important thing: the food.

One of the traditional Christmas foods is turkey and do you know where turkey comes from?

The turkey is the Mexican turkey (guajolote), the turkey is Mexico's contribution to Christmas! But you don't tell me today's topic.

Guajolote

All right, today we are going to talk about the verb to toast, which is to drink to the health of another and comes from brindis - to toast.

So, “brindar” in English is: to toast. And “brindis” is the action of toasting, what is the origin of this word?

It comes from German and means: "I offer it to you" or “I bring it to you”. This word came to Spanish through Italian. In 1527 the Germans under Charles V sacked Rome and celebrated by raising their glasses, saying Ich bring dir's and drinking, hence the toast.

So, it comes from the German; and the act of clinking one glass with another?

There are many theories about how the banging of glasses originates, it may be from the Middle Ages or earlier with the Romans, who were very fond of big parties. In them they applied many senses:

Vista               -                       sight

Olfato             -                       smell

Tacto              -                       touch

Gusto             -                       taste

And they did not have the auditory, hearing, this was added by hitting the glasses, with that beautiful sound, the sound of toasting.

And we also say “chinchín”, where does this expression come from?

From China, it was brought to Europe by the missionaries. When the Chinese drank they said ging ging, and it means please. Nowadays this word is no longer used in China, but it is used in English and French as well as Spanish. It is a word accepted by the Royal Academy of the language.

How do we toast?

           By saying ¡Salud!

To the students of Spanish.
