What is the topic of the day?   

        

 

In these 5 minutes of Spanish in the middle of the week we are going to talk about a word that is used a lot and sometimes without having a personal definition of it.

 

In other words, we don't really know what this word means to us, what, is it a concept? Is it time for philosophy class?

 

No, it is not philosophy but you will find this word in marketing books, well marketing in Spanish, it is the title of several books and many of us dream about it. Today's word is success.

 

“Éxito” in English is success and yes, it is a word that is repeated a lot these days, we are all looking for success.

 

Also, success is a false friend between Spanish and English.

 

What does false friend mean?           

Falsos amigos

 

A false friend is a word from another language that is similar in spelling or pronunciation to a word in the language we study but has a different meaning.

 

And it often plays a trick on us when we speak in the target language. It is like false friends who betray. In this case exit in English means “salida” and “éxito” in Spanish means success.

 

Let's look at the etymology of the word success. It comes from Latin: exitus and means exit.

Success in Spanish is the happy end result of a task, the good acceptance of someone or something.

 

And what if we give examples?

 

La fiesta fue todo un éxito. / The party was a great success.

Siempre tiene éxito en todos sus negocios. / He is always successful in all his businesses.

No es muy guapo pero tiene éxito entre las chicas. / He is not very handsome but he is a hit with the girls.

¿Tendrá éxito este podcast del éxito? / Will this podcast be successful?

Tú lo estás escuchando y eso para nosotros es éxito, ¡gracias! / You are listening to it and that for us is success, thank you!

La operación fue un éxito. / The operation was a success

Tuvo mucho éxito antes de la pandemia. / He was very successful before the Pandemic

El éxito está dentro de ti, es un estado mental. / Success is within you; it is a state of mind.

 

Success is getting what we want and enjoying it. Learning to enjoy what we achieve, not just the end result but the process, that is success.

¿Cuál es el tema del día?

 

En estos 5 minutos de español a la mitad de la semana vamos a hablar de una palabra que se usa mucho y a veces sin tener una definición personal de la misma.

 

O sea, no sabemos bien que significa esta palabra para nosotros, ¿qué es un concepto? ¿Es hora de clase de filosofía?

 

No, no es filosofía pero esta palabra la vas a encontrar en los libros de marketing, bueno mercadotecnia en español, es título de varios libros y muchos soñamos con ello. La palabra de hoy es éxito.

 

Éxito en inglés se dice succes y sí, es una palabra que se repite mucho en estos tiempos, todos buscamos el éxito.

 

También, éxito es un falso amigo entre el español y el inglés

 

¿Qué significa falso amigo?

 

Un falso amigo es una palabra de otro idioma que se parece en la escritura o en la pronunciación a una palabra de la lengua que estudiamos pero que tiene un significado diferente.

 

Y muchas veces nos juega una mala pasada cuando hablamos en la lengua objeto. Es como los falsos amigos que traicionan. En este caso exit en inglés es salida y éxito en español significa succes.

 

Veamos la etimología de la palabra éxito esta viene del latín: exitus y significa salida.

El éxito en español es el resultado final feliz de una tarea. También, la buena aceptación que tiene alguien o algo.

 

¿Y qué tal si ponemos ejemplos?

 

La fiesta fue todo un éxito          The party was a success
