What is the topic of the day?
In these 5 minutes of Spanish in the middle of the
week we're going to talk about a verb that is not cognate with English or
French and you're going to hear or see it generally related to localization and
it's ubicar.
It is a good word, for example we say: to locate a
place in a city, that is, to find an address. Many times, as Spanish teachers,
we use the word locación to make it easier to understand.
Yes, we say this for convenience but, in real life, we
talk more about location than localization. So, let's get on top of it!
How does the RAE define the verb to locate?
It is to situate or install a thing in space. And
location is the action and effect of locating.
Where does this word come from?
From Latin, ubicatio, in Latin ubi is where.
Does it have other meanings?
Yes, in Latin America it is used in other ways, but
let's see it in examples.
Since it's been a long time since we've done a
dialogue, let's imagine that a couple is getting ready to go out to a concert
with friends.
Did you buy the tickets for tonight's concert?
Yes, dear.
How about the location? I imagine you asked for a good
location close to the stage, or in the center, because if you don't ask they
send you to the worst place and ....
Um I don't know, the girl told me the location was
good....
Of course, she was a young girl, I see...we are going
to be far away, Maria is going to kill me....
Ahh I got a WhatsApp message from Pedro asking me to
send him the location of the theater....
You'd better program the GPS, I can't locate myself
well in that area.
I've already sent the location, I'm ready.
Are you going like that? With those ridiculous blue
shorts and a shirt, please, you're going to look crazy, out of place and to
think that when we first met,,,,, you dressed so well....

¿Cuál
es el tema del día?
En estos 5 minutos de español a la mitad de la
semana vamos a hablar de un verbo que no es cognado con el inglés o con el
francés y que lo van a escuchar o ver generalmente relacionado con la
localización y es ubicar.
Es una
buena palabra, por ejemplo decimos: ubicar un lugar en una ciudad, es decir,
encontrar una dirección. Muchas veces, los profesores de español, empleamos justamente
la palabra locación para facilitar la comprensión.
Sí, esto lo decimos por comodidad pero, en la vida
real, se habla más de la ubicación que de la localización. Así que, ¡vamos
arriba!
¿Cómo
define la RAE el verbo Ubicar?
Es situar o instalar una cosa en el espacio. Y la
ubicación es la acción y el efecto de ubicar.
¿De
dónde viene esta palabra?
Del latín, ubicatio
, en latín ubi es donde
¿Tiene
otros significados?
Sí, en América Latina se usa de otras maneras, pero
vamos a verlo en ejemplos.
Como hace mucho que no hacemos un diálogo vamos a
imaginar que una pareja se está preparando para salir a un concierto con amigos.
¿Compraste las entradas para el concierto de esta
noche?
Sí,
querida.
¿Y qué tal la ubicación? Me imagino que pediste una
buena ubicación cerca del escenario, o al centro, por qué si no pides te mandan
al peor lugar y….
Um no
sé, la chica me dijo que la ubicación
era buena….
Claro, era una chica joven, ya veo…vamos a estar
lejísimos, María me va a matar…
Ahh
tengo un mensaje de WhatsApp de Pedro me pide que le mande la ubicación del
teatro…
Mejor que programes el GPS, no me ubico bien en esa
zona.
Ya
mandé la ubicación, estoy listo.
¿Vas a ir así? Con ese short azul ridículo y una
camisa, ¡por favor!, vas a parecer un loco, un desubicado y pensar que cuando
nos conocimos,,, te vestías tan bien….
Bueno
pero el short azul es cómodo… ¿vamos con Pedro, María y con quién más?
Ese primo de María que tenía una tienda….
Primo
con tienda… a ver dime algo más pues no lo ubico…
Pues ahora es gerente de una empresa de gobierno,
siempre se ubica bien….
