topic?
In these 5 minutes of
Spanish in the middle of the week we are going to talk about the performing
arts.
The performing
arts are part of our lives and in the last few years the modern circus has
become very fashionable.
In fact, there was a
very well-known brand with a French name, Cirque du Soleil that inspires many
artists, now closed unfortunately because of the pandemic.
When I was a
child, circuses had lions, elephants and sometimes tigers....
Not now, those
practices are considered animal brutality. But I loved circuses when I was a
child, I wanted to be a trapeze artist!

Performing arts today
are not circuses, they are shows with lots of light shows and good music.
Yes, the practices
are very old, almost from the Middle Ages (Edad Media).
Yes, minstrels would be
the clowns of modern circuses, there are very funny clowns.
How do you say “juglares”
in English? It is jugglers or minstrels.
How do you say “payaso”
in English? It is said clown.
There is an activity
that is spelled almost the same in Spanish and English but the pronunciation is
different.
Similar to the
clown but without speaking, with gestures and painted white. / ¿Adivinas? Do you guess?
It´s the mime / “mimo”
In the performing arts is also very common dance or
dances.
Like fire dances. There are many fire dance shows in Los Cabos, have you
seen any of them?
Yes. They do fire dances on the beach and in hotels.
When we did the annual parties at Spanish in Cabo before the pandemic we
always had fire dances, African dances and drumming.

Along with fire we have juggling. How do you say “malabares” in English?
Juggling
Actually, in English,
German and Italian it is called juggling or similar, a word derived from “juglar”.
Only in Spanish and Portuguese it is named “malabar”.
You can think that
juggling comes from manipulating objects, moving them with the hand. I throw
the ball up and catch it with the other hand gracefully?
No, it does not come
from manipulating, it is a region of India.
From India?
Yes. In the 16th
century the English dominated but the Portuguese traded in the Malabar region,
there were excellent artists in this activity and the Portuguese began to call
this activity “malabar”.
So, “malabar” is a
word with a history, a region in India and a word that Portuguese navigators
started to use and that passed to Spanish...interesting.
Along with juggling
another modern and street art practice is poi.
What is poi?
It is a style of
juggling, consisting of rhythmic movements with a small ball attached to a
string or chain. It can be done with different elements, with many special
effects.
The most striking
is the fire poi, isn't it? Where does poi originate?
In the Maori community
of New Zealand, where it is still practiced today. Its name literally means
"ball tied to a string".
And it is also
called poi in English.
Another practice that
is spelled the same in Spanish and English but the pronunciation is very
different is the hula hula / hula hula.

¿Cuál es el tema de hoy?
En estos 5 minutos de español a la mitad de la semana vamos
a hablar de las artes escénicas.
Las
artes escénicas son parte de nuestra vida y en los últimos años el circo
moderno se ha puesto muy de moda.
De hecho, había una marca (Brand) muy conocida con un
nombre en francés, Circo del Sol que inspira a muchos artistas, ahora cerró lamentablemente
por la pandemia.
Cuando
era niño, los circos tenían leones, elefantes y a veces tigres…
Ahora no, esas prácticas se consideran brutalidad con los
animales. Pero, ¡a mí me encantaban los circos cuando era niña! ¡Quería ser
trapecista!

Mi mamá también se reía….no tengo mucho equilibrio para
caminar por “la cuerda floja” Es que uno de mis libros favoritos era el de una
niña que vivía en un circo y…
No te
imagino caminando por la cuerda floja / I can't imagine you walking the
tightrope.
Las artes escénicas hoy en día no son circos, son
espectáculos con muchos juegos de luces y buena música.
Sí. Las
prácticas son muy antiguas, casi desde la Edad Media / Middle Ages.
Sí, los juglares serían los payasos de los circos modernos,
hay payasos muy divertidos.
¿Cómo se dice juglares en inglés? Se dice jugglers.
¿Cómo se dice en inglés payaso? Se dice clown.
Hay una actividad que se escribe casi igual en español e
inglés pero la pronunciación es diferente.
Similar
al payaso pero sin hablar, con gestos y pintado de blanco / ¿Adivinas? Do you guess?
En las
artes escénicas también es muy común el baile o las danzas.
Como danzas con fuego. Hay muchos espectáculos de danza con
fuego en Los Cabos, ¿viste alguno?
Sí. Hacen
bailes con fuego en la playa y en hoteles.
Cuando hacíamos las fiestas anuales en Spanish in Cabo
antes de la pandemia teníamos siempre danzas con fuego, bailes africanos y
tambores.

impresionante. Ahora puedes ver las fotos…
Junto con el fuego tenemos los malabares. ¿Cómo se dice
malabares en inglés?
Juggling
En realidad, en inglés, alemán e italiano se dice juggling
o similar, palabra derivada de juglar. Solo en el español y el portugués se
dice malabar.
Se
puede pensar que malabar viene de manipular objetos, moverlos con la mano. Tiro
la pelotita para arriba y la agarro con la otra graciosamente…
No, no viene de manipular, es una región de la India.
¿De la
India?
Sí. En el siglo XVI dominaban los ingleses pero los
portugueses comerciaban en la región del Malabar, había excelentes artistas en
esta actividad y los portugueses comenzaron a llamar a esta actividad, malabar.
O sea
que Malabar es una palabra con historia, una región en India y una palabra que
comienzan a usar los navegantes portugueses y que pasa al español…interesante
Junto con los malabares otra práctica de arte moderno y
callejero es el poi
¿Qué
es el poi?
Es un estilo de malabar, consiste
en movimientos rítmicos con una pelotita unida a un cordel o cadena. Puede
hacerse con diferentes elementos, con muchos efectos especiales.
El más
llamativo es el poi de fuego, ¿verdad?. ¿Dónde se origina el poi?
En la comunidad maorí de Nueva
Zelanda, donde todavía se practica hoy en día. Su nombre literalmente significa
"pelota atada a un cordón".
Y se dice poi en inglés también.
Otra práctica que se escribe igual en español
e inglés pero que la pronunciación es muy diferente es el hula hula / hula
hula
