Good morning, good afternoon or good night, depending on where you are or what time you hear us

In these 5 minutes of Spanish in the middle of the week we are going to talk about the tradition of today, January 6th, Three Kings Day.

What is today's question?

 

What did the Kings bring you?

 

Well, to me, a lot of work, things to cook...

 

Well Eduardo, but do you have your letter for the Three Kings? In which you ask for everything you want, they are magicians!

This day is celebrated throughout Latin America and Spain. It is the favorite day of almost all children.

Was it your favorite day?

 

Yes, it started when I was putting together the Nativity with Mary and Joseph in the stable, the animals, the shepherds and workers. The Kings came from far away, from the Orient, so they were in the mountains that I built with paper-lined boxes. The Kings came day by day until they were next to the newborn baby on January 6th. On the night of the 5th I would leave the water for the camels, put my shoes in front of the Nativity scene and go to bed early.

 

And the next morning you had all the presents, what happiness! That's more or less the way it is in all Spanish-speaking families.

Maybe now there is no time to do the Nativity scene, nor to put the water for the camels, but all the children wait for their gift and make their letter to the Three Kings.

So, today's words are:

 

Traer un regalo.                                          To bring a gift.

Qué te trajeron los Reyes Magos?          What did the Wise Men bring you?

¿Qué les pediste a los Reyes Magos?   What did you ask the Wise Men?

¿Tienes la carta para los Reyes?            Do you have the letter for the Wise Men?

 

On this day when children get up early to look at their gifts, do you eat anything special?

 

On this day, eat the traditional “rosca de reyes”. It is a sweet bread decorated with delicious fruits.

In every house and at work there is a bagel to start with, you arrive and have to start the bagel and eat a piece. The peculiarity is that inside there are some little monkeys or plastic dolls. Watch out! You don't have to eat them.

Whoever breaks the thread and has a little doll inside must bring tamales on February 2, the day of the Virgin of Candelaria.

 

How do you get the “rosca”?

 

Traditionally it was made at home. Now you have the option to buy it, it is very common and it is in all the bakeries and in the supermarkets. If you visited Mexico on these dates you probably already know.

The expression is partir la rosca- to cut the cake

Buenos días, buenas tardes o buenas noches, según el lugar en donde estés o a la hora en la que nos escuches

En estos 5 minutos de español a la mitad de la semana vamos a hablar de la tradición del día de hoy 6 de enero, "Día de Reyes".

¿Cuál es la pregunta de hoy?

¿Qué te trajeron los Reyes?

Pues, a mí, mucho trabajo, cosas para cocinar…

Bueno Eduardo, pero ¿tienes tu carta para los Reyes Magos? En la que pides todo lo que quieres, ¡son magos!

En toda América latina y España se celebra este día. Es el día preferido de casi todos los niños.

¿Era tu día favorito?

Sí, comenzaba desde que armaba el Nacimiento con María y José en el establo, los animales, los pastores y trabajadores. Los Reyes venían de allá lejos, del Oriente, por lo que estaban en las montañas que construía con cajas forradas de papel. Los Reyes se acercaban día a día hasta estar junto al recién nacido el 6 de enero. La noche del 5 dejaba el agua para los camellos, ponía mis zapatos frente al Nacimiento y me iba a acostar tempranito.

Y a la mañana siguiente tenías todos los regalos, ¡qué felicidad! Así es más o menos en todas las familias de habla hispana.

Tal vez ahora ya no hay tiempo de hacer el Nacimiento, ni de poner el agua para los camellos, pero todos los niños esperan su regalo y hacen su carta a los reyes Magos.

O sea que las palabras del día de hoy son

¿Este día en el que los niños se levantan temprano para ver sus regalos, se come algo en especial?

Ese día se come la rosca de reyes tradicional. Es un pan dulce decorado con frutas muy rico.

En todas las casas y en los trabajos hay una rosca para partir, llegas y debes partir rosca y comer un trozo. La particularidad es que dentro tiene unos monitos o muñequitos de plástico. ¡Ojo! No hay que comerlos.

Quien parte la rosca y tiene dentro un muñequito debe traer tamales el 2 de febrero, día de la Virgen de la Candelaria.

¿Cómo se obtiene la rosca?

Tradicionalmente se hacía en la casa. Ahora tienes la opción de comprarla, es muy común y está en todas las panaderías y en los supermercados. Si visitaste México en estas fechas de seguro que ya lo sabes.

La expresión es partir la rosca- to cut the cake
