Los usos de por

Welcome to podcast number 90! And thank you for being with us week after week. And for today we are going to talk about ....

 

The uses of a preposition that we use a lot and it is Por. In these 5 minutes of Spanish in the middle of the week, we are going to reflect on 4 uses of POR.

I think this is great because usually a question asked by students of Spanish as a foreign language is when to use por and when to use para, because they have many uses.

 

So, let's just focus on 4 ways to apply one of them.

 

In this case, "por" implies motive, cause or reason for something, in English we would say: because of or due to

 

No compré el carro por el precio.   I did not buy the car because of the price.

No practica mucho su español por falta de oportunidades.  He doesn't practice much his Spanish due to lack of opportunities.

No pueden ir a caminar por el calor. They can't go for a walk because of the heat.

 

The second use of por refers to indeterminate location, we don't know exactly where something is located and we say está por ahí, in that neighborhood, around there by the skate park.

The second use refers to not fixed time or space location: by, around, along.

When we say “por ahí” we accompany this expression with an extended hand gesture pointing to a place saying: por ahí.

Let's go for the examples!

 

La carretera va por la costa.  The road goes along the coast.

 

No encuentro los lentes. I can't find the glasses.

Oops, I think I saw them (por ahí) somewhere on the desk.

 

The third application of por is very easy, whenever we refer to means of transportation we always use por or en.

Whenever we refer to means of transportation we always use "por" or "en" in this case, it means by.

 

Vamos a Los Cabos por avión. We go to Los Cabos by plane   

Antes nos comunicábamos por teléfono. We used to communicate by phone

Los libros llegan por servicio de paquetería. The books arrive by parcel service

 

The fourth use is in sayings: por favor, por ahora (for now) por casualidad (by chance); por lo menos (at least).

But we would like you to remember: por las dudas (just in case).

Hace mucho calor pero, por las dudas, llevo una chamarra para la noche. It's very hot but, just in case, I bring a jacket for the night.

Los usos de una preposición que utilizamos mucho y es Por. En estos 5 minutos de español a la mitad de la semana, vamos a reflexionar sobre 4 usos de POR.

 

Me parece muy bien pues normalmente una pregunta de los estudiantes de español como lengua extranjera es cuándo se usa por y cuándo para, pues tienen muchos usos.

 

Por eso, vamos a centrarnos solamente en 4 formas de aplicar una de ellas.

 

En este caso, “por” implica motivo, causa o razón de algo, en inglés diríamos: because of o due to

La segunda utilización de por refiere a la localización indeterminada, no sabemos exactamente dónde se ubica algo y decimos está por ahí, en esa colonia, por ahí por el parque de skate.

Cuando decimos por ahí acompañamos esta expresión con un gesto con la mano extendida apuntando hacia un lugar diciendo: por ahí

La tercera aplicación de por es muy fácil, siempre que nos referimos a medios de transporte utilizamos por o en.
