5 minutos de español / 5 minutes of Spanish: ¿Desear o deber?

 

How are you? Good morning, good afternoon or good evening depending on where you are or what time you are listening to us.

 

Thank you very much for being here week after week practicing 5 minutes with us.

 

In these 5 minutes of Spanish in the middle of the week we are going to review four regular verbs and one irregular verb that combined with infinitives form sentences with new meanings.

 

It's very practical, isn't it?

 

Para expresar que terminé de hacer algo recién, usamos acabar de.

To express I have just finished something, we use “acabar de”

 

Acabo de                  I just finished

Acabas de                You just finished

Acaba de                  You just finished; he or she just finished

Acabamos de           We just finished

Acaban de                They just finished

 

Acabo de terminar mi tarea, ¡qué suerte!           I´ve just finished my homework, lucky me!

Acaba de llegar mi suegra a casa.                   My mother-in-law has just arrived home   

Acaban de comenzar a vacunar                         Vaccination has just begun.

Acabo de lavar los platos                                      I just washed the dishes

¿Acabaron de jugar?                                             Have you finished playing? 

 

Para expresar algo que sí o sí tengo que hacer.    To express something, I really have to do.

Debo              I must

Debes            You must

Debe              He, she must

Debemos      We must

Deben           They must

 

Debemos caminar para adelgazar.               We must walk to lose weight

Debo organizar la biblioteca.                         I must organize the bookcase

Debes tener la membresía de SpanishUp2U para practicar español.

Deben permitirnos una pequeña tanda comercial para conocer nuestro nuevo sitio web.

You must allow us a short commercial break to get to know our new website.

 

Or by using negation

No debo enojarme por tonterías

I shouldn't get angry about silly things

 

To express need:

Necesito                    I need

Necesitas                  You need

Necesita                    He needs

Necesitamos            We need

Necesitan                 They need

 

Necesito organizar la sala.                                               I need to organize the room.

Necesitan planificar las vacaciones.                  They need to plan their vacations.

Necesitamos comer menos carbohidratos.       We need to eat less carbohydrates.

     

To express wish:

Deseo                        I wish

Deseas         You wish

Desea            He / she wishes / You wish

Deseamos    We wish

Desean         They wish

 

¿Desean participar en este club de lectura?    Would you like to participate in this book club?

¿Desea otra margarita?                             Do you want another margarita?

Desean estudiar                                         They want to study.

Buenas noches, ¿desean cenar en el salón principal?  

Good evening, would you like to dine in the main hall?

 

To express possibility:

Puedo                       I can

Puedes          You can

Puede                       You, he or she can

Podemos       We can

Pueden         They can

 

Lo siento, no puedo ir.                   I am sorry, I cannot go.

¿Puedo ayudar?                             Can I help?

Los niños pueden hacerlo.                      The kids can do it.

Podemos hablar español.             We can speak Spanish.

¿Qué puedes hacer?                     What can you do?

 

We have just seen 5 verbs that can be used in different situations and are accompanied by infinitives.
