Today, in these five minutes of Spanish, we're going to talk about a verb we use a lot in Spanish that isn't a cognate in English.

The verb is enterarse.
Se traduce como to find out o to learn.
— ¿Te enteraste de las novedades en Spanish in Cabo?
— Did you hear about the news in Spanish in Cabo?
— No, ¿cuáles?
— No, what news?
— Que tenemos un club para practicar español.
— That we have a club to practice Spanish.
— ¡Qué padre! ¿Y cómo se llama?
— Cool! And what’s the name?
— SpanishUP2U, español a tu medida.
But hey, we still have a few minutes to learn how to use this verb.
Enterarse can mean:

• anunciar → to announce

• comunicar → to communicate

• informar → to inform

• contar → to tell

• dar a conocer → to make known

Por ejemplo, en los medios de comunicación:
— Entérese sin tener la vista fija.
— Find out without having your eyes fixed.
¿Y en la vida diaria? Veamos ejemplos:
En casa: El esposo dice
— ¡Qué bonito corte de pelo tienes!
— What a nice haircut you have!
Y la esposa
— ¿Recién te enteras? Hace un mes que lo traigo.
— You just noticed? I’ve had it for a month.
En el doctor:
— La única manera de enterarse si tienes problemas de riñón es con un examen.
— The only way to find out if you have kidney problems is with a test.
En un reglamento:
— Puede ser útil enterarse de los beneficios para su cónyuge.
— It may be useful to find out about benefits for your spouse.
En la calle:
— El conductor estaba tan concentrado que no se enteró de que se caía la mercancía.
— The driver was so focused that he didn’t notice the goods falling.
A short answer is also used: aware or aware.
También se usa una respuesta corta: enterada o enterado.
For example, your boss sends an email with instructions.
Por ejemplo, tu jefe manda un e-mail con instrucciones.
Tú respondes: enterada. / got it.
Más ejemplos rápidos:
— Me enteré de que Juan se casa.
— I found out that Juan is getting married.
— ¿Te enteraste del partido de ayer?
— Did you find out about yesterday’s match?
— No me enteré de nada.
— I didn’t hear about anything.
