What is our topic today?

We are at the end of November so we start with the evaluation of the year and the arrival of Christmas, so I thought of a very nice word, which is a cognate of English and French.

Malena, I remind you that we have 5 minutes if the word is a cognate or a similar word why comment on it, besides, the evaluation of the year ....

I know, that's why in this podcast 172 we are going to talk about “compromise”, which although in English is a cognate, it is pronounced very differently.

Yes, “compromiso” in English is compromise and it is also translated as engagement or commitment,

It is very interesting the origin of this word, do you know what it is?

No

It comes from the Latin: compromissus, composed of cum - together and promissus - promise. In other words, a promise together with another or others.

Promesa- promise

Juntos- together

A commitment is a promise and also an obligation that you have either by word of mouth or with a signed document.

For example: "Tomorrow at five o'clock in the afternoon I will come by your house, it is a commitment.

On the weekend we have a commitment with some friends, we are going to have dinner together.

There are different types of commitment, such as personal, family, social, work, among others, and they are developed throughout life.

It comes from the word promise, a very nice origin. However, many people are afraid of commitment.

Especially men.... I would say.

That's discrimination with men. There are many women who don't want affective commitments.

Yes, of course I'm kidding. It's a couple relationship that is not a sacrifice as Elton John says.

No es un sacrificio - It´s not a sacrifice.

Pareja – couple - Not to be confused with bird

Couples first become boyfriends (boyfriends) then they become engaged (engagements) and then they get married.

Traditionally the groom gives the bride an engagement ring as a gift.

Anillo de compromiso - engagement ring

Many couples do not have an engagement party, nor do they get married, yet they have a great engagement.

Of course

Casarse- to get married

We can have a commitment to society

"Commitment to the neighborhood means participating in projects that improve our quality of life."

Colonia- neighborhood

There is also a work commitment that implies responsibility.

For example, SpanishUp2U has a commitment to its partners, the Spanish walkers, that involves helping them every day to improve their Spanish.

We have a commitment to record these 5 minutes for you, week after week.

¡Hace casi 4 años!  Since almost 4 years ago!

That's a big commitment!

And your commitment to listen to us and comment on us, that's why we thank you, that is, we thank you for your commitment all these years.

Otro tipo de compromiso es el que tenemos con nosotros mismos, ¿estamos comprometidos con nuestras metas (goals)? ¿Estamos comprometidos realmente en mejorar nuestra salud? / Another type of commitment is the one we have with ourselves, are we committed to our goals?
