Today I was waiting all morning at the vaccination center and I thought of this verb, to wait. How original, isn't it?

Esperar in English means "to wait" but also, "to hope".

Esperé unas dos horas en el Centro de Salud para vacunarme.

I waited about two hours at the Health Center to get vaccinated.

How do we recognize when we speak of esperar as to wait or esperar as to hope?

By the context and by the intention of the speaker.

In short, “espero” as "to wait" in English, it's a regular verb, you wait for something or someone.

Espero + infinitive: Esperamos llegar a tiempo/ We hope to be on time Esperan vacunar al 50% de la población. / They hope to vaccinate 50% of the population.

Bueno, lo comienzas: Espero que al recibir este e-mail o esta carta te encuentres bien al igual que tu familia.

Sí, eso espero.

En resumen, espero como to wait en inglés  es un verbo regular, esperas algo o alguien.

 Me esperas en el mismo lugar de siempre; You wait for me in the same place as always;

Esperas el e-mail de Spanish in Cabo.com. You are waiting for the e-mail from Spanish in Cabo.com.
