Good morning, good afternoon or good evening depending on where you are or what time are you  listening to us.
In these 5 minutes of Spanish in the middle of the week we are going to talk about a simple and everyday topic: the work.
We are at the end of April and in almost all Spanish-speaking countries May 1st is celebrated as Labor Day.

Why this day? Because it commemorates the strike of the workers of some factories in Chicago and the death of some of them in these events.
In the nineteenth century (19th century=SXIX) conflicts between workers and employers were very common and unions were not legal.

Here we go to the words related to work:

The verb is to work (trabajar) and those who work are workers (trabajadores). The noun or noun: work .El trabajo
La huelga- strike
El sindicato - union
Derechos laborales-labor rights
Mercado laboral o mercado de trabajo- labor market
If we continue with a little bit of history... all over Latin America at the beginning of the twentieth century (S XX) unions obtain rights for workers such as:

• La ley de 8 horas, 8 horas de trabajo, 8 de descanso y 8 de ocio.
• The 8-hour law, 8 hours of work, 8 hours of rest and 8 hours of leisure.
• La ley de la silla, los trabajadores de las fábricas debían tener una silla para trabajar sentados en lo posible.
• The law of the chair, factory workers had to have a chair to work sitting down as much as possible.

Let's go to the positions or jobs in a company or enterprise.
(Vamos a los cargos o puestos de trabajo en una empresa o compañía)

En una fábrica tenemos obreros u operarios- workers or operators
En la construcción el  albañil, el constructor, el arquitecto, el jefe o capataz.
In construction, the bricklayer, the builder, the architect, the boss or foreman.
Hermosa palabra albañil que viene del árabe. Beautiful word mason(albañil) that comes from Arabic.

If we talk about enterprise or company
Gerente o manager
O puedes ser un miembro del directorio o un ejecutivo.
Or you can be a board member or an executive.
Casi todas las empresas tienen ejecutivos de venta y administrativos.
Almost all companies have sales and administrative executives.
(Los estados latinoamericanos tienen empleados de empresas públicas o estatales.) Latin American states have employees of public or state-owned companies.

También hay muchos profesionistas o profesionales como: contadores, doctores, ingenieros, abogados, profesores y muchos más.
¿Y tú? ¿A qué te dedicas? O sea, ¿en qué trabajas?
¡Ah!, ¿eres retirado o jubilado? Pues la profesión no se pierde nunca o sea sigues siendo médico/a, carpintero, dentista, costurera o  vendedor/a.
 
And when we talk about professions we always use the verb:  ser:
We are Spanish teachers (Somos profesores de español)
He is a mechanic (Es mecánico)

Some time ago, we used to hear this expression very far from reality .... “My wife doesn´t, she is a housewife”
Well, it is crazy to say that housewives don't work, because they do work at home.
These days we remember those who work, "mamis", housewives, daughters (hijas), daughters-in-law (nueras), what a hard times!

A special greeting to the accountant of Spanish in Cabo who is an accountant, mom and these days teacher of her two children, happy labor day Yetzabel and thanks for all your help.

Buenos días, buenas tardes o buenas noches según el lugar donde estés o a la hora en la que nos escuches.

En estos 5 minutos de español a la mitad de la semana vamos a hablar de cumplir que significa ejecutar o lograr una meta. Cumplir viene del latín: complere que es completar o llenar algo.

¿Cuándo usamos este verbo?
Es un verbo que se usa mucho y va cambiando de significados según el contexto en el que lo aplicamos, casi todos los días de alguna manera lo usamos.
Por eso vamos a ver muchos verbos en inglés que se traducen como cumplir en español: fulfill, meet, comply accomplish, acchieve, obey, follow
¡Uy! ¡Cuántos verbos! Pero, por lo menos  cumplir es un verbo regular,  terminado en ir como escribir, así que cumple con las mismas terminaciones: yo cumplo/ tú cumples; él / ella /usted cumple / nosotros cumplimos / ellos/ ellas o ustedes cumplen
¿Dónde lo  usamos?
Se usa en el lenguaje oral tanto como en el escrito; en el contexto formal o en el lenguaje cotidiano.  Vamos a analizar algunos contextos como por ejemplo:
1 Cumplir como completar una lista de condiciones
Todos los participantes deben cumplir con las reglas de la competencia / All participants must comply with the competition rules
El candidato cumple con todos nuestros requisitos / The candidate fulfils all our requirements.
Los estudiantes deben cumplir con las normas de la escuela. / All students must obey the rules of the school
Tuvimos que trabajar duro para cumplir el plazo. Esto nos pasa muy seguido en SpanishUp2U / We had to work hard to meet the deadline. This happens a lot at SpanishUp2U.
2 Cumplir como lograr o ejecutar algo
Siempre cumplo mis metas.          I always meet my goals
Cumplí todos mis sueños a corto plazo.    I realized all of my short- term dreams
Los marineros cumplen las órdenes del capitán. The sailors follow the captain's orders.
3 Cumplir con una promesa o juramento
Espero que cumpla su promesa / I hope he keeps his promise
Y cumplió su juramento de amor eterno / And he fulfilled his oath of eternal love
4 Cumplir años. El día más bonito para todos los niños es el día de su cumpleaños o su cumple.
Cumplí 45 hace algunos años / I turned 45 a few years ago
Este mes de abril estamos cumpliendo 1 año del taller vamos a platicar / This April we are celebrating the first anniversary of the workshop: Vamos a platicar
